Great Women Sages Updated: Celebrating Our Nearly Lost Legacy

To Be Scheduled

Dr. Kerwin would like to celebrate the lives and contributions of highly independent and accomplished women about whom we know far too little. For example: Hildegard Von Bingen was a twelfth century polymath, mystic, visual artist, composer, author of a comprehensive book on herbal medicine and spiritual writer. Tullia D'Aragona was a Renaissance poet, philosopher, writer, classicist—and a defiantly feminist courtesan. Diotima of Mantinea was a female priestess, a revered philosopher and mystic who taught Socrates (who taught Plato who taught Aristotle). Diotima is the unheralded founder of the most famous school of Western Philosophy and she taught about love.

Would you like to learn more about these fascinating, multi-faceted women? Would you like to examine their relevance for your life today? Join us! Coming together, we will honour our foremothers, creatively examine our own aspirations and wisdom, and co-create delightfully transformative experiences.

Please email Dr. Kerwin if you would like to participate in a Great Women Sages Workshop. If there is interest, a workshop will be scheduled.

The Virgin & The Whore — Inspired Dialogue: Mother Mary & Tullia D'Aragona

Today many feel an intense inner calling to reconcile their apparent contrasting yearnings for sacred sensuality and personal security/purity. On the evening of 8 September, the feast day of Mother Mary's birthday, we will hear from two fascinating spirits, Mother Mary and Tullia d'Aragona. Mary, a so-called Virgin, and Tullia, a defiant Whore, will dialogue about ways to reverently integrate our sacred sensuality and uplifting spirituality, and answer questions. A published philosopher, poet, feminist, and courtesan in sixteenth century Italy, Tullia championed female independence and sensuality. Reviling Mother Eve and all women "born of flesh" as foul sewers of sin, Patriarchal Church Fathers glorified Mary as a miraculous Virgin mother, alone exempt from the stain of female depravity. But Mary and Tullia insist that they are not at all opposites. Both object to ways of dividing women against themselves into categories of sacred and profane, Virgin or Whore.

This evening event is an activity, not a workshop.

Mother Mary: Alive and Well in the 21st Century

For over two millennia Mother Mary has defied those who would contain and stereotype her. No plaster statue, she remains a powerful, profound, and highly personal energetic presence in our time. Mary is approachable; she gives; but she also commands respect. Mary won't be confined in one religion, to one region, by one image or construct.

Join us at beautiful Moon Yoga as philosopher Ann Kerwin reveals how Mother Mary has been an unpredictable, irrepressible force for two millennia: how she ordered Jesus to begin his public life; how she resisted Church doctors attempts to limit and define her; how she appeared physically not in churches to hierarchy, but in nature to the poor, illiterate, and despised; how she freely offers comfort, strength, aid and inspiration — no strings attached.

A participatory workshop, we will enjoy fun intuitive, reflective activities, exploring and celebrating our own grace, radiance, and yes, our sacred irrepressibility.

Let Your Love Flow: A Transformative Day with Pele

Who Is Pele?
The Hawaiians call her Pele.  But she is no local deity. Deep, unpredictable and irrepressible, Pele is the Molten Heart of Mother Earth, the Great Transformer. This workshop is not about Pele but about you. You too brim with possibility for new life, new fire, and new flow. Join us!

Expect to inspire and be inspired. Expect the unexpected!

On the Road to Who We Are: Resilience, Reinvention and Revelation

Join this lively participatory workshop with Philosopher Dr. Ann Kerwin to celebrate the life and writings of Christine de Pisan (1364-1430), the first known female professional writer, and our own paths to growth and becoming.

Against the wishes of her mother, Christine was educated by her father, Court physician and astrologer to Charles V, King of France. Married at 15, widowed at 25, Christine drew upon hidden talents to survive as a solo mother supporting her mother, 3 children, and niece. A wise, witty, and learned woman, Christine penned over 40 major works, including love poetry, feminist critiques, biography, autobiography, philosophical and spiritual works, collaborating with illustrators to create her own beautiful manuscripts.

Christine's story likely resonates with many of us today. "Unplanned events" can prod us to dig deep—to re-examine, reinvent and reinvigorate ourselves. While exploring the legacy of this early Renaissance sage, we will examine and honour our own inner resources, resilience and vitality: catalysts for our ongoing renewal and regeneration.

Becoming What We Love The Wisdom of Diotima  —  Healer, Sage and Teacher of Socrates

Twenty five hundred years ago, a young man studied with a wise philosopher. His name was Socrates. Hers was Diotima.

Diotima, priestess of Mantinea, taught Socrates about love, wisdom and beauty. Socrates, his student Plato, and Plato's student Aristotle are famous today, but few know about Diotima—the powerful provocative sage who likely founded the most famous school of Western Philosophy.

Come to this participatory workshop with Philosopher Dr. Ann Kerwin to learn about Diotima and her philosophy of love and to ponder how you might use love wisely to shape yourself and your life.

Seers and Seekers: Wisdom from the Delphic Oracles

Blessed with inner guidance, we humans still live on the cusp of the unknown. Begin 2014 by exploring wisdom from the Delphic Oracle Tradition.

For over 5,000 years, Kings, peasants, scoundrels and sages across the ancient world flocked to the famed Oracles at Delphi for intuitive guidance. Originally the all female Oracles served Gaia. But, when the cults of the Olympians suppressed goddess cultures, the oracular site was re-dedicated to Apollo, god of rationality and order. His priests deposited the Oracles' fees in their Treasury. Perhaps subversively, the Oracles dispensed their best advice free, posting a sign above their sanctuary: KNOW THYSELF.

2014, with its resurgent goddess energy, offers exciting opportunities to better know ourselves as intuitively wise beings who must still seek. Come celebrate yourself as the gifted seer and courageous seeker that you are!
